Reservations for Show Pigs for the 2012 Summer Shows has begun.

We are getting calls from out of state again this year. Thank You for coming so far !

We had Grand Champions and Reserve Champions this past year. Most of these were
from our Elite line of Show Pigs. Congratulations !!! A job well done. It takes more that just a Good looking pig to win a show. Feeding the right food at the right time and overall taking good care of your show pig is the other 1/2 to the puzzle. Great Job !

We even had a couple of our Reg. Show line of pigs win Grand and Reserve Grand awards ! Great Job to you all that made that happen.

Please do not wait to put in your reservation. We are again going to the midwest to our business partners back there and will be picking out some elite show pigs and bringing them back here to Utah. Let us know if you are wanting some these type
of Show Pigs. We have started having our 1st litters farrowing a week or so ago.
We are excited at this years Show Pig Prospects ! We did alot of AI'ing for this year,
however our best litter so far is from one of own boars.

ended up and took 6 out of the top 12 spots.

We want to extend a real big "CONGRATULATIONS" to River for his Great Job in feeding out and raising this Show Pig. River received GRAND CHAMPION OF THE RICH COUNTY UTAH FAIR. Way to go !

River fed the right feed and did the little extras it takes to make it to the top.

I was just called and told that one of our clients was just awarded
the "GRAND CHAMPION MARKET HOG of the RICH COUNTY
UTAH FAIR !"

CONGRATULATIONS, River, on a Job Well Done ! It is not easy
to have Grand Champion Show Pigs. It takes a lot of work and
dedication. I am told pictures are coming so we will post pictures
of River and his Grand Champion Hog soon....

We just had our 1st Show of the Season here in Utah. It was the Spanish Fork, Utah Jr. Livestock Show. Congrats to all of our FFA and 4H winners !! We are proud of the great job you did with your Show Pigs this year. Out of the top 12 Show Pigs I do believe that 5- 6 of those were kids that had purchased from us. Special Recognition to our Supreme Grand Champion Winner !!!! You did a Fantastic Job in preparing your Show Pig for his Special Day !.

We do have some Breeding Age Gilts available . Please let me know soon.
We are only selling 4 or 5 of these Girls. They are about 280 lbs and Blue
Butts.

Just a Reminder to all our Clients this year.
1. You should be worming your pigs every 30-40 days.

2. Please if you have not reviewed the tips that I have
sent to you directly in the last 30 days. You may
want to review and see if there are any new tips you
can start using.

early fall shows as we call them. The Utah
State Fair would be one of these.

preparing to go to their new homes. Some have left
already others are going this week and the rest will
be leaving over the next couple of weeks or so.

We would like to Thank all those that have already reserved their 2011 Show Pigs. Thank You.

We are excited what this year has in store for everyone. We feel we have better Show Pigs than we had last year and we have so many return clients which means most our clients were happy with their Show Pigs last year. The more you raise Show Pigs the better you as clients get in raising them and helping them to turn out so nice.

For those that are sort of new to Raising Show Pigs Did you Know.... That alot of Blue butts or White pigs with a few black spots are born pure white
and that the spots start to show a couple of days or even 2 weeks later. Fun little fact.

Another little fact ...... For those New to raising pigs..... If you will start when the Piglets 1st get to their new home this usually works. You also have to clean the pen daily or every 2 days for this to work also. A pig will go to the bathroom in the same spot in his or her pen. If they when you 1st get them,they start going in a spot you would rather them not go in start on day one. Pick up the poop and move it to the spot you want them to go in and try to clean the old spot pretty good so the smell is not there.

Happy Holidays ! Wishing all our friends the best this coming year.

We are excited. We have some of our Show Piglets due to be born in
about a week.!!!! It is always exciting to see how when we plan on
who should be bred to who how this all works out.
We have increased our odds this year by really increasing
the quality of our herd. We have purchased New Boars and Sows !

We hear every year that there are kids (that have not purchased from us)
that have worked hard and did not make weight. If you will follow
our suggestions we can help a lot in avoiding your Show Pigs not making
weight. I can honestly say that anyone that has followed the direction
and help we have given them from the day they purchase their
Show Pig from us has made weight.

Now is the time to start reserving your Show Pigs for the
County Fairs in 2011. We have price ranges for most budgets.

We have Show Pigs of different ages so that we can have the right size
Show Pig for your Shows. So far we have reservations from
California, Wyoming,Montana, Idaho and of course Utah.
The reason I mention this is because we want all our potential clients
to know that we do have Show Pigs of all ages. If we get your reservations
soon enough we will even breed one or two of our sows just for your show.

If we can get enough Show Pigs reserved for California and Oregon we will
be able to make delivery of your Show Pigs a lot easier.

Prepare now to raise Great Show Pigs next spring

Thank you for following Utah Show Pigs.

This Blog is just a reminder that now is a great time
to prepare to bring your Great Show Piglets home in the spring.

1. Sterilize your Pen , inside and all around the outside.
a.Next years Show Piglets do not need this years Show
Pigs germs.
b. Bleach and water (let it stay on for 15 minutes then
rinse off.
c. Lyme your dirt pens inside and out. Doing it now ,
then the snow will help the lime to go away.
Be careful using the lime.

2. Your Great Show Pigs need to be warm. Not one
heat lamp , not two heat lamps not 5 heat lamps.
No one can tell you how many you will need. If the
Show Pigs are all huddled on top of each
other , you will need more heat. If they are laying
by themselves as far away from the heat then it is
cooking them. Buy a Thermometer they are about 10-15$
The Show Pigs need to be at 70 degrees most of the time.
If it is just impossible to keep them at 70 degrees
they can be kept lower but they have a greater chance of
getting sick. If they do not get sick then they may not gain
as much weight as they should be , because all their feed
is going for warmth not weight. I would advise to never
let your Show Pigs get colder than 50 degrees for more
than 2 or 3 hours.

3. Straw is usually cheaper this time of year. Straw around
an outside pen really will help keep the warmth of the
lights in. Then maybe put a large piece of plywood on
top across the straw and pen to hold some heat in as well.
Cut a hole to stick the light through or the cord through.

4. If you raised Show pigs two years ago for the first time
and none of your Show Pigs got sick but last year they
did, then a good chance you either did not disinfect the
pen or the Show Pigs got colder this year.

I have many other helpful tips but I reserve
those for my clients.

and answer any questions all along the path to the Fair.

What did Utah Show Pig just do??

Oops ! We did it again !

We just got better again. In a few days we will be posting pictures of our great PureBred Yorkshire Boar we just purchased from the midwest. He will be helping us to produce more of the Elite Show Pigs that we ran out of this year for the demand we had. This soon to be Show Pig producing Boar will be breeding a few of our ladys this fall. We are expecting big things from this massively muscled Boar. His Full Littermate Brother was the Champion Yorkshire Boar the Big Hog Show (STC) this year.

Our Boars Full Sibling brother was purchased by Shipley
Genetics for $35,000. I think he calls him Perfect Storm.

We are excited that this great breeder of this soon to be
Show Pig producing Boar let us purchase him. Please check back soon for pictures .

Show Pigs getting closer to Fair Time !

This is just a reminder to you all that when your
Show Pig is weighing about 150 to 175 lbs you
should look at changing your feed. Should start
looking at a finisher type feed.

May need to start using supplements depending on the
needs of your Show Pigs. We here at Utah Show Pigs
are currently suggesting Honor Show Feeds.
They seem to have the best program that we can get
access to here in the Utah area.

Remember it is best to gradually switch feed over a 3 day
period so that your Show Pigs do not go off feed for a couple
of days and you get behind on the weight you need to have.

Remember you should be weighing your Show Pigs
every 2 to 3 weeks and figuring out their daily rate
of gain and estimate what weight they will be, by the
time of the show. Contactthe seller of your Show Pigs
if you think you may be to heavy or to light.

Please do not contact your breeder 2 weeks before the fair
and ask for help. It is to late then. Contact them now and
the next two weeks if you want help that will work.

We suggest strongly going to this website ,

It sure has been busy 4 months. Thank You !!!
We are Sold out for all Fairs in the months of
July, August . September we still have some
Great ones !

We have some Great Replacement Gilts that
we are adding to our Herd. We are going to cull
some of our Sows as well. Some for Age but
most importantly for Quality ! As you have
seen a couple of Posts earlier , we have
received some nice compliments. We want
all our present buyers and future buyers
to know we are always trying to stay ahead
of the game and give you the BEST SHOWPIG
YOUR MONEY CAN BUY !!!

We Can Hardly wait for this Fair Season to
get here. We are excited to see how the
the Kids do this year !!

IMPORTANT INFO :
We have just in the last two days seen things some
of our customers are doing. We have seen some
using Grass Hay or Alfalfa Hay for bedding or using
it to confine pigs that are in a bigger size pen.

PLEASE, stop using grass hay and or Alfalfa Hay.
The Show Pigs will eat this and get filled up with
this and not eat as much of the well balanced feed
that they should be eating that will help them grow
and look their best. Use Straw if not using shavings.

Please, weigh your pigs at least once a month. Your
Show Pigs should weigh at least 30 lbs more than
when you purchased them if it was a month ago.

WE HAVE BEEN RECEIVING ORDERS FOR
NEXT YEAR ALREADY. THANK YOU.

We do not get rich on our Show Pig Business.
We do it manly for fun and helping kids
to do well at the fairs. If we know that you
will need 20 Show Pigs for next year then we
can plan early and breed enough sows to fill
the orders. By doing this when a new family
who has never raised Show Pigs calls us and
says "Can You Please Help US, we have never
done this before and we want to get our kids
started doing this ". Then we will have enough
pigs to go around and not run out and have to
tell that family we can not help them.

It tears my Partner and I up when
we have to tell a family , sorry we
can not help you this year.

We feel we had a very successful year ! I say this not
in how many Show Pigs we sold but in how many
customers we feel we were able to make happy with
the Quality of Show Pig they received for their hard
earned money they paid.

There once was a Chicken and a Pig. They started talking one day and said they should go into business together. The Chicken said we could sell Ham and Eggs! The Pig said wait a minute.....

WE had Multiple Winners in Utah and Idaho ! Many Class Winners !
We also had Multiple Grand Champions and Reserve Grand Champions.

Did you notice we put class Winners before our Grands and Reserve Champions?
Yes we had Grands and Reserves but there only be one of those per fair.
We do not want our 4H and FFA kids that purchase our Show Pigs to think that
if they do not get the Grand Championship that they failed.

Learning Responsibility and having Fun is most important. We push class
winners and even getting in the top 4 of a large class is something to be very
proud of.

Last year we had some of our lower priced pigs beat some of our more expensive
Show Pigs. Alot of that has to do with Feeding properly and Conditioning as well.

A Breeding Machine

What a Great Breeding Boar. He is a Cross Bred ! He was bred to make Show Piglets !
Look at the Natural Muscle Tone . He is very powerful in his front and rear !.
He was bred to alot of our Show Pig Momma's last fall to produce Great Show Pigs!

More info on him is coming. For Example his 1/2 Brother won the World Pork Expo last year .
FEEDING AND CONDITIONING :
This is another big piece of the puzzle. Paying alittle higher price for a Show Pig
does not always beat out the less expensive Show Pigs. Proper Feeding and Exercise
is very important. We here at Utah Show Pigs are here to help all along the way.
We do not just sell you a pig and forget about you. If you will weigh your pig
and take a couple of pictures every 2 or 3 weeks and let us know the exact day of
your show we will help adjust your feed to help you be at the weight you need to
be . Do not wait till 30 days before your show and ask for help . This does not
always help. We Ask you to start early. Keep your pigs warm that 1st month !.
They should be at a Temperature about 55 - 70 degrees. Closer to 70 is better.
In the hot season they should still be around 70 degrees to do best. Never raise
just one pig by itself. They tend to not eat like they should. We have many
customers that buy an Elite Show Pig and also a $150 show pig as a back up and
use as a buddy. We have had some $150 Show Pigs beat the Elite Show Pig.
Sometimes one pig will get sick and having that back up is nice.

We give helpful hints to Succeeding if asked for. There are alot of pointers that
we give to our customers. You are not just buying a Show Pig, you are buying
a Program with us. Much Success !!

Great Show Pig Pedigree

Our Reserve Champion Show Pig Gilt's pedigree is loaded with Top Notch Sires of Champion Show Pigs !! We are very excited !

The Great Sire of this Show Pig Gilt comes from a deep powerful litter of 15 weaned ! This sire has a huge rump, big top and great wheels ! Her Dam is a gilt purchased from the Lorenzen's at the STC show in 2007 for $6,500.

The Grandsire on the Sires side, TC Masterplan 1-1 , was the Top Selling York Boar at the "06" World Pork Expo, for the grand total of $40,000. This Great Sire is by the Granddaddy of Sires "Power Train" . This boar, Power Train has produced numerous Champions and has had pigs he has sired , sell for thousands of $. Infact as high as $40,000.

For those Show Pig enthusiasts out there that know Show Pig Bloodlines , here are the Big Breeders that helped put our Show Pig together. Lorenzen, Grimm, Rodibaugh and Eddie are just some of the big breeders.

Lorenzen , Had alot to do with her bloodlines. Frontier 273-4 , which was one of Lorenzen's best boars , shows up in her pedigree over 22 times. Most Show Pigs have this great Sire in their blood lines at least 3 or 5 and some go back about 12-15 times. But she has this great sire in blood lines 22 times !

Other big names in her pedigree are Triple Play 41-4 , shows up about 6 times. Slam Dunk shows up at least 11 times in her pedigree. Other greats that show up are Depth Charge, Mac A Roo, BowFlex, Sprint, Captain 19-2, Pipe 14-2, Main Squeeze, Psss Powerball and Corner Post.

For those that are not into pedigrees, I am sorry to (boar) you. (ha, ha)

What all this says is that she is not a fluke. She should breed true due to having so many greats in her bloodlines. Her Babies will be those Show Pigs that will make the Judges look twice maybe even 3 or 4 times.

A Great Show Pig Momma has been found !!

Boy, are we excited !!! It took some doing and had to jump through some hoops but we were able to get a Purebred Yorkshire Gilt that will be a great asset to our Show Pig sow herd. Even though I was not able to go to the World Pork Expo Show and the Auction that was held in Iowa, I was able to purchase this Great Show Pig Gilt from someone else who was there and purchased some Great Show Pigs .

This Great Show Pig Gilt that we purchased is 7 months old and was the Reserve Champion Yorkshire Gilt at the World Pork Expo. This Gilt has a Great Pedigree and should be a Great Show Pig producer. I will include pictures of her and some highlights of her pedigree in the next couple of weeks.

Hello ! It has been awhile since we have given you an update of what is happening here at Utah Show Pigs. We have been visiting with Breeders all over the USA in search for just the right Show Pig Gilt (gilt, female pig that has not had a litter of pigs yet). It is not easy to find the perfect Show Pig. "Perfection is a Journey". The name we call our Mothers of our Show Pigs is "Journey".

We have searched for months trying to find the right Show Pig Gilt to add to our Small herd.
We hope to have good news soon! We will let you know hopefully very soon....

We have had emails from people from all different parts of the USA. Some asking for help in knowing how to care for their Show Pig Project. Others have been disappointed in how they did at the show and want advice on how to be a contender. Others have just wanted to know where they can go and get great Show Pigs in their own states.

Our 1st Litter has left the Nest !!

Today has been a Sad Day for us but I hope a very Happy Day for the Buyers of our Show Pigs.
We only had one (Show Pig) that said he did not want to leave. He was a hard one to catch and did he let everyone know that he did not want to go. The whole neighborhood heard him , I'm sure .
I Hope everyone was pleased with the pigs they received.
We here at Utah Show Pig wish each and everyone of the new owners the best with their Show Pig project this year. I won't wish you luck because we feel the proper spelling of the word luck is.....
....W-O-R-K...... If these Show Pigs are to have a chance at doing well at their Shows , alot of work and time will need to be spent with these Show Pigs. Yes, they look awesome now but I say they look as good as you care and feed them.

As we say here at Utah Show Pigs... "Garbage in Garbage out !" Feed them the Best Feed and you will bring the best out of these great Show Pigs.

It is getting to be the time when our 1st litter of Utah Show Pigs will be leaving the nest. They have really come along. As a Hog Breeder I can say I am really excited on how deep this litter turned out and what great Show Pigs they have grown into. It will be very interesting to follow these Show Pigs and see how each of them do in their County Fairs. A few of these Show Pigs even though they were born with no black on them at all , have developed some black spots here and there. I will be taking pictures of these Show Pigs before they leave to go to their new homes and post them here by next week sometime.

Selecting Your Show Pig

Selecting your Show Pig at an early age is not easy. A Good Breeder will not sell you a pig for the Show Ring until that Show Pig is at least 8 weeks of age. By that age the Pig is starting to really show his or her potential. I feel the biggest reason to wait till 8 weeks is because of the Health issue. Especially in the cold climates. These Show Piglets are just to young and are not ready to cope the weather and the stress of going to a new home.

The items I look for in a Great Show Pig are:

1. General over all look. You may say what is that? With experience, you just know.
2. A nice wide back. Not one that has the sides of the pig forming a point at the top.( Razorback)
3. A level back. Not one that hunches up or sways.
4. A level underside. Not one that has a gut hanging down.
5. Make sure both ears either lay down or both stand up. Not one up and one down.
6. I like to see the mother and or Father of the Show Pig I am buying. ( at least know who the parents are and what is their background. Has the parents breeding produced winning Showpigs before.
7. I like the front end of the Show Pig to be as tall as the back end. ( This means the Show Pigs need to have some shoulders)
8. Last but not least, I like a nice hip that is full and shapely.
9. I personally have never seen a wild colored Show Pig win a Show. ( White, Black, Black and
White , Red ,sometimes red and white but not 3 or 4 colors mixed together.)This does not mean there has never been one that has won.
10. Of course if you found a Show Pig that was excellent in all these areas it will cost more.

"What Makes a Great Show Pig?" That is a question that is asked alot. Breeding , the Genetics, is a good place to start. As I have mentioned before Health is the most important thing. The Feed and how you feed and water your Show Pig is the 2nd most important factor. The last but not least is the Breeding , the Genetics, How does the Show Pig actually look. You could have purchased a $500 baby Show Pig and still not do well if the 1st 2 factors are not done properly. However your Show Pig can be the Healthiest and been fed the best feed and still not do well in the Show Ring. Utah Show Pigs offers help and advice to all the 4H and FFA students that purchase a Utah Show Pig. Our next post will be in a couple of days and we will try to describe what to look for in Purchasing your Show Pig .

Our Litter Family is going to Hollywood !! Not really but we did take alot of pictures so it would be easier to decide if you want to put a deposit down. We have a closed Show Pig breeding heard. Which means we do not bring outside pigs or mix pigs from other herds with ours. This way we do not have to worry about so many different disease's that are out there. We also do not let the public into visit without precautions. As you can see these little show pigs have shoulders. Pigs do not develop bigger shoulders than they are born with. Of course they get bigger as they grow but they do not become anymore prominent than they are when they are little. Now the Hips or Hams do and can get more prominent as the pig matures if raised correctly. As you can see these Show Pigs are very well balanced and have a real nice large topside. You will noticed dimples above a couple of pigs tales , which is always nice to have. Clients that purchase our Show Pigs this year will get priorty rights to next years litters. Preparing your place for a Utah Show Pig

For all those getting ready to purchase your Show Pig in March or April now is a great time to start preparing and sanitizing the place you are going to raise these Show Pigs . Whether it is dirt floors or cement you need to clean the pen. Using Lime on your cement floor or dirt floor would be best to kill germs that your previous pigs may have left.Let this stay on the floor for a couple of weeks or so before cleaning it and spraying out the pen with water . Spreading the lime around two feet of the outside of the pen would be great and dusting the sides of your pen with it as well. Some also use 10-1 ratio of water to bleach and then rinse that off after a day or so as well.

There are 3 very important factors to raising a Show Pig if you want to make weight and do well.

1. Health of the pigs. This is the number one factor towards doing well. You can purchase the best pig and still not do well at the Show if your pig gets sick. Must watch your pig for signs of sickness, 2 or 3 times a day for the 1st week you bring your pig home. This is a very stressful time in a pigs life and this is when he mostly likely gets sick if he does.
2. Nutrition of the pigs. The pigs need a well balanced diet. The better the quality of feed the better your pig will grow and develop the muscle and tone needed to do well.
3. Genetics. If you have taken care of the two factors above , but so has your competition then the pig that has the best genetics will usually do the best in the Show.

The Stork Arrived with Little Show Piglets

I have included a pic of the little guys. These Showpiglets will start taking shape over the next two weeks. I will post some pics again when they have started to bloom. Momma had a hard time, which is pretty normal when it is their 1st litter. Usually it does take a couple of weeks to tell what quality of Showpig you have actually ended up with from your breeding. However we can tell already that there are 3 or4 superstars in the bunch and 3 others that could be there if worked with and taken care of properly. We are way excited on our results. They have lots of muscling in their shoulders and wide along the top. Show Piglets Farrowing Date

I have had some requests to know the due date of our litter of Show Pigs that we have bred for this go around. They are due in about 2 weeks. Jan 21st is the day ! The past few days we have been working on getting our Gilt use to hotter tempertures. She has been in a space where she can go outside or inside. By having her have this convienence this means she has been subject to the cold temps we have been having. When the Show piglets are born they need to be at 90 - 95 degrees for the first 2 weeks . They could be in colder temps but then you risk loosing some of the piglets and they do not grow as fast in that kind of an enviroment. I have been communicating with some of the biggest pig breeders in the midwest on what they have to do to help with getting things warm when it is so cold there. That is why we have the soon to be Momma enclosed with a heat lamp and soon we will add another heat lamp. We will have her part of the pen at about 75 degrees when the piglets are born.

We will be offering these Show Pigs for sale in time for alot of the Utah Fairs. We are thinking maybe the last part of March or April when we will offer them for sale.

It has been a while since my last post. I hope everyone had a Great Christmas and I hope this New Year is a Great one for you and your family. Since my last posting I have added some pics of our Foundation Gilt that we had bred. ( for those new to the pig world, a gilt is a female pig that has not had a litter of piglets yet). After she farrows ( has her piglets) she will be referred to as a sow.
She is a Registered Purebred Yorkshire Pig. We have had her bred to an Exotic Boar. ( a male pig that has been crossbred (bred to other breeds of pigs) to produce the best looking Show pigs possible. In fact the boar she was bred to is a Great Son to the Famous Exotic Boar called Fatal Attraction. This boar has sired some of the greatest show pigs and at the top to the highest number of show pigs as well. This son of Fatal Attraction will add more muscle and body to the piglets and give these piglets the extra boost they need to help win shows. Breeding for Show Pigs is not an easy feat. Breeding the right animals together is the key to the Best Show Pigs.
